Why dimensional modeling?

In a data-driven business world, the ability to derive actionable insights from raw data is critical to success. Dimensional modeling is the proven methodology for structuring complex business data so it becomes optimally usable for analytics, reporting and business intelligence.

Developed by Ralph Kimball, this methodology has been the industry standard for designing the presentation layer in data warehouses and data solutions for over three decades.

Ten sessions, three parts

The first five sessions cover the fundamentals. Sessions 6–9 deepen them through two complete case studies. In session 10 you present your own design.

1–5

Fundamentals

  • Star schema versus OLTP, facts versus dimensions
  • Grain definition as the most important design decision
  • Fact types: transaction, snapshot, accumulating
  • Slowly changing dimensions (SCD type 1, 2, 3, 6)
  • Date dimensions and bridge tables
6–9

Case studies

  • Retail (FastChangeCo): sales, inventory, promotions
  • Financial: chart of accounts, GL transactions
  • Multi-currency and consolidations
  • Factless facts, centipede facts
  • Multi-valued dimensions
10

Capstone

  • Your own dimensional model from your working environment
  • Live presentation, 5 minutes
  • Constructive feedback from the trainer
  • Designs by other participants from various industries
  • Choose which live session you attend

Video material and all course materials are in English.

Weekly live sessions

Complementing your self-study with the video materials, live sessions take place weekly β€” one hour each, for direct exchange with the trainer and the other participants.

Voluntary participation

The DMFC can be completed entirely through self-study. The live sessions are an additional offering.

Questions & discussion

Ask about the video content, discuss your exercise solutions and talk through your design decisions.

Flexible & international

In German or English, depending on the participants. All sessions are recorded.

Exercises & material

Each session contains hands-on exercises with realistic business scenarios. All exercises are thoroughly explained and come with sample solutions.

  • Design Fact_Sales with grain definition
  • Create Product Dimension with SCD Type 2
  • Model Date Dimension with fiscal calendar
  • Design Bridge Tables for many-to-many
  • Build complete Retail Data Warehouse
  • Create Financial Chart of Accounts dimension

Plus bonus resources: decision trees, checklists and best practice guides. Please plan sufficient time for the assignments and for deepening the material between sessions.

What you can do afterwards

  • Create precise grain definitions β€” and understand why this is the most important design decision.
  • Design conformed dimensions that are used consistently across multiple business processes.
  • Master all fact types β€” transaction, snapshot, accumulating snapshot β€” and know when each is appropriate.
  • Implement slowly changing dimensions (SCD type 2) for historically accurate analysis.
  • Purposefully apply advanced patterns such as factless facts, bridge tables and centipede facts.
  • Create comprehensive date dimensions with calendar and fiscal hierarchies.
  • Avoid classic mistakes such as NULL foreign keys and use default dimensions instead.
  • Create bus matrices and use them to plan enterprise data warehouse architectures.
  • Apply best practices for performance, indexing and partitioning.
  • Integrate dimensional models with modern data architectures β€” data vault, data lakes.
  • Document and communicate dimensional models professionally.

Frequently asked questions

Are there any prerequisites?

No. No specific prior knowledge of dimensional modeling is required. A basic understanding of databases and business intelligence is helpful but not mandatory.

The DMFC is aimed at everyone who wants to design or develop data warehouses β€” from beginners to experienced practitioners who want to systematise their knowledge.

Is SQL required?

SQL knowledge is helpful but not required. The training focuses on designing dimensional models. SQL examples illustrate concepts, but you do not need to be able to write queries.

The focus is on conceptual and logical modeling, not on physical implementation.

What are the technical requirements?

To take part virtually you need a laptop, PC or tablet and the ability to use Microsoft Teams β€” in the browser or as a client.

For the exercises and your design presentation you need a tool for creating diagrams, for example PowerPoint, Lucidchart, draw.io or Visio.

What is the difference to the Data Modeling Master Class?

The Data Modeling Master Class (DMMC) is a comprehensive training in general data modeling, covering conceptual, logical and physical modeling for relational and NoSQL databases.

The Dimensional Modeling Fundamentals Class (DMFC) focuses specifically on dimensional modeling for data warehouses following the Kimball methodology with star schema design.

The two complement each other: DMMC for general data modeling, DMFC for the presentation layer of the data warehouse. To the DMMC landing page β†’

Will I receive a certificate?

After successfully participating in all sessions and giving your design presentation in a live session, you receive a certificate of participation from the TEDAMOH Academy.

How does the personal design presentation work?

You present a dimensional model you designed yourself, from your own professional environment, in a live session. You have 5 minutes of presentation time and then receive constructive feedback from the trainer.

You can choose the date freely β€” there are several live sessions to pick from. The presentation takes place live via Microsoft Teams. Detailed requirements and support are provided during the training.
